white noise
a video mirror
White Noise is a piece about infection and the public space. By definition a public space is one in which contact with others, whether welcomed or not, is unavoidable. From ambient noises to dirt and germs, waves and molecules constantly travel from body to body, taking with them part of the previous host and infecting the new host.

The piece is also about purity, whether genetically or ideologically, and its intrinsic unattainability in society. Interactions in society involves continual exchanges of thoughts and genes, of ideas and particles. Thus 'pure', in the context of humans and society, is an abstract term used for convenient compartmentalization, and undermines the fluidic exchange processes of nature.

In a camera-monitored space, a video mirror tracks and projects the movements of individuals within the space. Each person entering the space is represented by a field of particles of one colour, but as people interact with each other they inadvertently exchange particles and the purity of colour is forever lost.

As a person linger in the space, he/she interact with more and more people each with a different colour. As the mix of particles approaches a uniform distribution, the appearance of the mirrored person resembles that of white noise.

A firewire camera tracks subjects against a brightly lit wall, and sends the video data to a Macintosh computer running Processing. A program moves the coloured particles accordingly and the resultant display is projected onto the opposing wall.
Note: Source code uses Processing 0124. Newer versions of Processing has API changes and will require adjustments before running.
