BREAKING NEWS
An Investigation of News Sources
Team final project for Database Aesthetics class.

News sources are never as impartial and objective as set out to be. Stories they choose to cover and the particular words they use affect their portrayal of a story, which can be very telling of their viewpoint and biases.

We selected two stories (Gaza and Gay Marriage) and tracked their coverages across different news sources over a week. Using that as our data set, we used multiple techniques to analyse the articles to find and see any intrinsic biases.

Some of the measures we used:
Headline Text
Number of Articles
Word Frequencies
Relative Word Frequencies
Principle Component Analysis

Relative word frequency diagrams are shown below. They compare word frequencies of words used by a particular news source on a story with respect to the word frequencies that all news sources combined. Some immediate observations, such as Haaretz's use of "Israeli Defense Force" as opposed to AlJazeera's use of "attack" with respect to the Gaza story, can be made.
