Disturbing Actions
Interactive Installation
The installation consists of a 30" by 30" table made from 18 gauge stainless steel with a 10" by 10" cut-out in the centre which acts as a window to the LCD screen mounted below. The fixture is hung from the ceiling with four steel cables.
The screen displays a 3D checkerboard consisting of 64 squares that are free to rotate in all directions. The checkerboard is static unless the installation is disturbed by shaking or tilting it. The fixture senses the disturbances and dislodges virtual balls that accelerate towards the 3D checkerboard. The collisions between the balls and the board result in interesting and beautiful distortions of the checkerboard. Over time, each of the pieces attempts to slowly rotate towards its original position, but not quite reaching its initial position. Each of the patterns the checkboard settles to is unique. |
